Just a couple of years ago I renewed my interest in a favorite pastime from long ago.  Growing up in Sacramento there were sections of the bike trail that I use to frequent.  My renewed interest lead me to purchase a mountain bike, which turns out is not optimal for bike trail riding, and took to the parkway.  I soon found myself venturing on trails I never knew existed.  In fact, I was sure that I had discovered these trails; surely the asphalt trail with a yellow strip had been placed by the hand of God and awaited my discovery. 

Riding the trail has been a great pleasure, and a reminder of what a beautiful asset Sacramento has in the American River Parkway.  You’ll never find me in a matching spandex outfit tearing up the trails like Lance Armstrong.  I ride at a bit more leisurely pace, taking in the balance of the natural beauty around the trail, the meandering waters, and the accompanying animals that come near to feed and drink.  Several bridges, Nimbus Dam and Sac State Aquatic Center, along with some abandoned structures sprinkling the parkway also make for beautiful sights. 

The parkway serves as home for athletes from kayaking, running, and riding from all ranges of skills.  With the exception of a rare booze fueled rafter, the community is a sort of endorphin haven of well tempered Sacramentans.  Next time you have a weekend free take a stroll, ride, or float along the beautiful parkway.  It’s ours for the enjoying. 

As with many great things we take for granted, there are some great local groups whose diligent work helps to keep our American River Parkway beautiful.  Or you can join a group like SacFit and gain the pleasure of a great training experience, as well as contribute to the preservation of the Parkway.  Here are a couple of the local organizations:

My friends, Julia Dollison http://juliadollison.com and Jacosa Limutau were soloists and sang beautifully.  Ardie Bryant, the 80+ year old "Ambassador of Dance" wowed with his performance of David Danced.  The house was packed for three shows.  Congrats to all on a wonderful show.
